Funerals – not listed as a sacrament - designate the rites which the Church carries out with respect to the body (or the ashes) of a person who has died. The Funeral rites have as a goal to provide the occasion to:

Say goodbye to the deceased person;
Give thanks for all the good that they have experienced
and accomplished during their lives;
Pray that they will be forgiven their sins and so enter into God’s presence.

Christian Funerals are usually held in a Church with a celebration of the Eucharist, but they may also be celebrated without a Mass. The Church prefers that a funeral be celebrated in the presence of the body. Although not encouraged, the practice of celebrating a Liturgy of Farewell in the funeral parlour may be authorized.

The request for a Christian Funeral is made to a contact person who is responsible for this in a parish or to a representative of the parish where the deceased person was from. On occasion, the funeral director will contact the local parish.
