Comme vous, je suis peiné et préoccupé par la situation des habitants d’Haïti, ce pays plusieurs fois éprouvé au cours des dernières années.

J’invite les membres de l’Église de Montréal à prier pour les victimes du tremblement de terre d’hier. Je suis de tout cœur avec les personnes touchées de près ou de loin par ce drame et je les assure de notre collaboration dans la recherche de solution pour secourir et soulager les victimes de ce séisme.

Dès maintenant, je vous invite tous et toutes à participer à la collecte d’urgence que Développement et Paix a lancée ce matin.

DÉVELOPPEMENT ET PAIX INVITE LA POPULATION À DONNER

DÉVELOPPEMENT ET PAIX suit de près la situation en Haïti et invite la population à faire preuve de générosité envers les victimes de cette catastrophe.

L'organisme s'engage déjà à verser une première somme de 50 000 $ en aide d’urgence à son principal partenaire, Caritas Haïti.

« Caritas Haïti pourra compter sur un premier 50 000 $ pour l'achat et la distribution de nourriture et de biens de première nécessité », assure Michael Casey, directeur général de l'organisme de coopération internationale.

DÉVELOPPEMENT ET PAIX acheminera aussi toute somme reçue de la population d'ici à Caritas Haïti et à d'autres partenaires sur le terrain.

L'an dernier, DÉVELOPPEMENT ET PAIX a appuyé en Haïti huit projets de développement et quatre secours d'urgence, soit une somme totale de 600 000 $.

I am saddened and preoccupied, as I am sure you all are, by the situation facing the people of Haiti. This country has been the victim of various tragedies over the last few years.

I invite all the faithful of the Church of Montreal to pray for the victims of yesterday’s earthquake. I offer my wholehearted sympathy to all the people affected, directly or not, by this tragedy and I want to assure them of our collaboration in finding ways to help and comfort the victims of this catastrophe.

Here is the text of the communique issued this morning by Development and Peace:

DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE LAUNCHES EMERGENCY APPEAL FOR EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS IN HAITI

Montreal, January 13, 2010.
DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE is launching an emergency appeal to support humanitarian aid relief in Haiti in the wake of a devastating earthquake that is estimated to have affected millions of people in the country.

The organization has already committed a first pledge of $50,000 to Caritas Haiti, which runs 200 medical clinics in the country but is in dire need of financial resources to respond to the growing humanitarian needs of this population in crisis.

“Caritas Haiti can count on our support to help them provide first aid supplies, food, shelter and other basic necessities. Our thoughts are with the people of Haiti in this time of crisis and we are anxiously awaiting news from our partners there. We are concerned for their safety and well-being,” said Michael Casey, Executive Director of Development and Peace.

All donations made to DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE will be sent directly to its partners on the ground in Haiti, mainly Caritas Haiti.

Last year, DEVELOPEMENT AND PEACE supported eight community development projects in Haiti and provided funds for four emergencies, totalling $600 000.
